Universal’s 2022 Slate Sets Peacock Plans

Peacock Now Reaching 33m Subscribers

Universal Pictures looks set to follow suit with Disney, Paramount and Warners as the company has today announced how it intends to release its films in 2022.

NBCUniversal says the majority of titles from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, Illumination, and DreamWorks Animation will all release on Peacock as early as 45 days after their theatrical release. The arrangement also does not impact the studio’s existing PVOD deals with exhibition.

The aim is to ensure Peacock has a “steady stream of fresh, original films exclusively for Peacock customers throughout the year.” The biggest tentpoles however won’t be a part of this arrangement – namely “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” “Jurassic World: Dominion” and 2023’s “Oppenheimer”.

First run films are proving to be a big draw for SVOD services and this puts Peacock in line with how the Disney+ service, HBO Max and Paramount+ all intend to handle their film releases in 2022.
