Epic Games has announced that a pre-download is now available for “The Matrix Awakens,” a special Unreal Engine 5 experience (NOT a full-fledged game) for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S users.

Said download will activate on Thursday night U.S. time during The Game Awards and offers a technical demonstration developed by Epic Games and members of the “The Matrix Resurrections” team, including director Lana Wachowski, to show off the power of Unreal Engine 5.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be presenters at The Game Awards where it’s expected more details about the experience will be shared. Reeves and Moss reportedly have done performances that are a part of said experience.

For those unfamiliar, Unreal Engine 5 is the latest version of arguably the most famous game engine in the world with this iteration designed to offer photorealism on par with movie CG and real life – and all in real-time.

Very, very few games use the tech at this point, though “Fortnite” moved over to it with its just released ‘Chapter 3’. However that’s not a title that is expected to show off the power of the new engine. A YouTube search for the term can show you some incredible creations though done by amateurs.

The Game Awards will stream December 9th at 8pm US-EST. “The Matrix Resurrections” meanwhile arrives in cinemas and on HBO Max on December 22nd.
