The original “Law & Order” mothership series is returning to NBC over a decade after it wrapped its twenty season and 456-episode run.
The network has handed out a straight-to-series order for a revival of the famed procedural. Rick Eid will serve as showrunner on what is being billed as the show’s twenty-first season.
An episode count has not yet been determined, but some former cast members are expected to return for the new run. Which ones though remains unclear.
During its run, L&O was nominated for more than fifty Emmys and took home the best drama series trophy in 1997.
It was abruptly cancelled one season away from beating “Gunsmoke” as TV’s longest-running primetime drama series. Ultimately though the still ongoing spin-off series “Law & Order: SVU” broke that record and has aired twenty-three seasons to date.
It’s presently unclear if the new “Law and Order” will make it to air during the current broadcast season or if it will be pushed to the 2022-23 season.
