French-Lebanese filmmaker Audrey Diwan’s 1963-set abortion drama “Happening” (L’Evenement) has won the top prize of the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Hand of God” took the runner-up Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize along with the Marcello Mastroianni Award for its young star Filippo Scotti.

Jane Campion won for Best Director with “The Power of the Dog,” Maggie Gyllenhaal won for Best Screenplay with “The Lost Daughter,” and best acting wins went to Penelope Cruz for “Parallel Mothers” and John Arcilla for “On The Job: The Missing 8”. Michelangelo Frammartino’s “Il Buco” took a Special Jury Prize.

In the Horizons section, Laurynas Bareisa’s “Pilgrims” took best film, Eric Gravel scored best director for “A Plein Temps” which also won for best actress (Laure Calamy).
