Stone On New “South Park” Films, Game

Stone On New South Park Films Game
CBS Viacom

This past week came the news that six new seasons and fourteen new movies tied to the “South Park” franchise are on the way.

The new content is the result of a recent $900 million deal between “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and ViacomCBS with the new films to debut on the Paramount+ service (the TV series is tied to HBO Max for now).

Bloomberg has now revealed some more details in an interview with Stone who also talked about other works on the way tied to the deal. First up with those “South Park” movies, Stone spoke of the difference between them and the regular series episodes:

“The show is 22 minutes. It’s a sitcom. It is ancient, in a way. But we still really love that. At the same time, you come up with an idea and realize it’s longer than 22 minutes. There are ‘South Park’ episodes that are high concept enough where if you wanted to make a movie you could. We wanna scratch both itches. We feel like we can.

We have this idea where the first ones for Paramount+ are ‘South Park’ but not quite. We have a high concept idea for the first one to set it apart. But right after that we go back and do a six-episode run for Comedy Central and HBO Max, probably at the end of this year or early next year. The classic kind. But the movie first – either in one part or broken up in two. We think of it creatively as one big piece. Like a 90-minute movie.”

It also looks like another video game is in the works – this one in 3D and “set in the world of South Park”. It’s not clear who is publishing the game at this point, but the game is being done in-house as opposed to the two previous games (“The Stick of Truth,” “The Fractured But Whole”) which were done by outside developers.

The pair have also had a documentary crew following them for much of the past decade, led by filmmaker Arthur Bradford, with plans to turn that into a series or film. They are also building a team of artists who specialise in deepfakes for a movie involving the technology. That has also been in the works for a few years and falls under the deal.

They also have a new original horror movie and a new musical in the works along with some other films, but only some of those movies will go to ViacomCBS – the rest are “carved out because we have partners”.
