Michael Shannon had reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to play Cable in the upcoming “Deadpool” sequel at 20th Century Fox. Shannon is said to have been the top choice for about a week, but no deal is yet in place.
Cable (aka. Nathan Summers) is a time-traveling mutant with telepathic and telekinetic abilities, and he and Deadpool are often paired together (albeit reluctantly) in the Marvel comics.
The superhero sequel recently cast “Atlanta” breakout Zazie Beetz as mutant mercenary Domino, the other key new mutant role in the follow-up.
An official release date has yet to be announced. David Leitch (“John Wick”) will direct the project with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick penning the script. Reese recently confirmed to Cinema Blend that both a third “Deadpool” and a separate “X-Force” film are in the works:
“I also think (Deadpool 2) is working in an expansive way towards X-Force, which will really be more of an ensemble. But then that will allow us to do both an X-Force movie and a Deadpool 3, which actually contracts back down… I think we’ll be able to take two paths. One is where we’re launching something bigger, but then another where we’re contracting and staying personal and small. So I think best of all worlds, really.”
The writers have also indicated other and more obscure characters that “only die hards will know” will be a part of the upcoming second film.
