China To Produce Kurosawa’s “Masque” Script

Chinese film company Huayi Brothers is putting an unfilmed script from the late master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa into production. Penned before his death in 1998, the film is an adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The Masque of Red Death”.

The story follows a prince and his wealthy noble friends who attempt to escape a deadly plague. Upon holding a masquerade ball, the prince is confronted with Red Death itself. Vincent Price previously starred in Roger Corman’s 1964 film adaptation.

Kurosawa began writing the script in 1975 after finishing “Dersu Uzuala” and completed the script before he passed away. A young filmmaker is being sought to direct the film which is expected to be completed by 2020.
