With the final numbers in, Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has overtaken “Avengers: Endgame” to have the biggest domestic box-office opening weekend in history with $360 million.
Combined with stars Tom Holland and Zendaya also having “The Odyssey” in second place with a $51 million third weekend, it resulted in the single biggest U.S. collective box-office weekend in history at $430 million.
Naturally, people want to know when the next Spider-Man is coming. According to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige in a new Variety interview, it’s going to be a little while:
“There are always plans. But right now, he [Holland] is going to rest after that global tour. He and Zendaya are going to take a good and restful victory lap, which they very much deserve.”
Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman calls this a major victory for cinemas, telling the trade:
“Spider-Man is uniting people across cultures & ages. People can piss on theatrical all they want, but that’s one thing that only movies – and movie theaters – can do.”
Asked about what the studio’s plans are for the next Spider-Man, Rothman says:
“The honest truth is we don’t know at this point. This has been the focus of our studio for almost two years. I can tell you this: I certainly, certainly hope. I heard Tom say at some point that he wanted to continue, and we would love it if he did.”
He also addressed the studio’s infamous attempts at spinning off the franchise that failed, from “Morbius” to “Madame Web,” saying:
“Ultimately, the audience wasn’t satisfied enough with them. Whether that’s a fair assessment of those movies, who knows. That’s howling into the wind. The audience is the boss, and they didn’t respond. It’s as simple as that… We never looked at it as the ‘Sony-Marvel Universe.’ We looked at if there were worthwhile movies to make with other characters. At the moment, there are none in active development.”
Finally, Feige also teased that the ending of Brand New Day leads into “another very well-known Marvel franchise created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby”.
