Acting veteran and “Guardians of the Galaxy” alum Michael Rooker is in talks to play King Shark in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Gunn is writing and directing the film which is currently in pre-production ahead of a shoot this Fall. The project isn’t so much a straight sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 film as a ‘new take’ on the property.
Rooker is a frequent collaborator with Gunn, having worked on every film he’s directed, and quite a few he’s produced, so the hiring makes plenty of sense.
King Shark is a humanoid shark and the son of a shark god. Introduced as a Superboy villain, the character has appeared in live-action numerous times on The CW’s “The Flash” TV series.
Rooker will join a cast that includes David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang.
Viola Davis and Joel Kinnaman are also rumored to reprise their Amanda Waller and Rick Flagg roles respectively. John Cena also has a key role which hasn’t been revealed, but as there’s only one key new character yet to be officially cast – Peacemaker – it’s a good bet that’s his role.
Peter Safran and Charles Roven are producing and the film will hit cinemas in August 6th 2021.
