“One of Them Days” filmmaker Lawrence Lamont has been set to direct “Last Friday,” the newest installment of the Ice Cube-led “Friday” buddy comedy film franchise at Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema.
Marking the first new entry in 25 years, and the fourth overall for the series, Cube is not just starring but also writing the script and producing. Bob Teitel and Michael Gruber also produce.
The original film was set in South Central Los Angeles and featured Cube and Chris Tucker as slacker Craig Jones and small-time drug dealer Smokey, respectively. The pair faced increasing problems with jobs, girlfriends, exes, family, and death threats.
F. Gary Gray helmed that 1995 first film with sequels “Next Friday” in 2000 and “Friday After Next” in 2022. Cube wrote and starred in both those, but Tucker didn’t return. “Friday: The Animated Series” also premiered for a short run in 2007.
The new one will be shot in Southern California under the state’s production incentive program granting it $11.4 million in tax credits. A 40-day shoot involving 43 cast members and 150 crew is planned.
