Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop are all reportedly working on an animated series set within the “Warhammer 40,000” universe reports Variety.
Additionally, former “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill is set to executive produce the project. Cavill has long been attached to lead a live-action series currently in development at Amazon.
That project is still in play and will be developed alongside this animated series. The other day came news, via Games Workshop’s latest financial report, that filmmaker Mike Flanagan had joined the series as an executive producer and a potential showrunner and director.
The animated series will serve as a spin-off of the Amazon animated anthology series “Secret Level” which featured a “Warhammer 40,000” episode in late 2024. Dave Wilson, who directed that episode, is the co-creator and director of the new animated series.
Wilson will develop the project alongside John Orloff (“Masters of the Air,” “Band of Brothers”) but plot specifics are under wraps beyond it featuring the elite group of Space Marines known as Deathwatch which hunts alien threats.
“Secret Level” creator Tim Miller will executive produce alongside Wilson, Cavill, Natalie Viscuso, Andy Smillie and Roy Lee executive producing. Wilson says in a statement:
“’Secret Level’ wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories. The response to the ‘Warhammer’ episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story. I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in ‘Warhammer 40,000’ for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”
The project marks the latest Amazon project based on gaming IP in the wake of their success with “Fallout”. Live-action “Tomb Raider” and “God of War” shows are in production while “Mass Effect,” “Wolfenstein” and “Life is Strange” are in development.
