Marvel Studios released “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” last Summer to a relatively lukewarm response, along with so-so box-office.
Costing $181 million net to produce, the film ultimately made $521.9 million worldwide – that’s the highest-grossing “Fantastic Four” film to date and the best of last year’s three MCU films, but not remotely in “Spider-Man” or “Deadpool” league.
Talking with Variety about the phenomenal box-office success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” he touched upon how the recent F4 failed to do the numbers Marvel had hoped for when asked about audiences getting tired of more of the same story:
“Many things can be true at once. I think last year’s Fantastic Four looked and sounded like nothing that had been done in a superhero movie before, and it only [grossed] $521 million.
Brand New Day is very directly a part four. It picks up right after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and yet it tells a story that resonates. It’s ultimately about loneliness, and the dangers of staying in our apartments by ourselves, looking at our phones. That resonates across cultures and across the globe right now.
Asked if he thinks the excitement around the new “Spider-Man” film will translate into success for “Avengers: Doomsday” and other upcoming MCU fare, Feige says:
“For ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘X Men,’ it bodes very well. When a shared universe works, these are the results.”
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is in cinemas now, with “Avengers: Doomsday” opening December 18th.
