“Eddington” and “Midsommar” filmmaker Ari Aster has confirmed that he has a script for a “Hereditary” follow-up ready, but has no current plans to make it.
“I wrote a prequel to this. It never feels like the right time. It’s a prequel, not a sequel so I don’t know where this goes” he said while appearing as part of the American Cinematheque’s annual Bleak Week.
Aster is among those, Robert Eggers as well, whose works often get lumped under the label ‘elevated horror’ which is something he hates. He says “It’s sort of a box that I was put in, and horror fans took umbrage. ‘Who do you think you are?’ I didn’t say it, I didn’t say it.”
Aster has made four films, though the enduring popularity of “Hereditary” has been both a blessing and a curse:
“In some ways, it’s really irritating. I’m trying to get better. Every film I make I actually feel kind of prouder of than the last, and yet it’s like diminishing returns as far as their reception is concerned. I’m thrilled. You want something to last. It’s great. More people come up to me and say they love this film than any of the others. Midsommar I guess is the other.”
Aster also spoke about the recent success of YouTube filmmakers Kane Parsons and Curry Barker with “Backrooms” and “Obsession” respectively, saying:
“This is a really interesting month with Curry and Kane. I hadn’t seen Kane’s shorts until Backrooms came out. He’s really interesting. He’s 20 years old and what he’s been doing on Blender, I think he’s clearly following a vision. I’m thrilled to see that. That’s so exciting.”
Aster serves as an executive producer on the upcoming Robert Pattinson-led “Primetime”.
