Legendary Entertainment (“Dune,” “A Minecraft Movie,” “Godzilla”) is reportedly considering a takeover of mini-major studio Lionsgate (“John Wick,” “The Hunger Games”).
At present, the companies are looking into potentially partnering on some films. Should that deal go well, the arrangement could evolve into something more.
In May, Lionsgate was split in two – the studio business going one way and its Starz TV business going another. Warner Bros. Discovery, who often works with Legendary, announced its own plans to undergo such a process a month ago.
Legendary meanwhile sold off Chinese multination Dalian Wanda Group’s stake in the company last year. As a result, the studio is now backed by U.S. private equity giant Apollo Global Management.
After that was done, it allows for Legendary to pursue M&A deals if it wishes to do so without concern over part foreign ownership issues.
Lionsgate is coming off a rough time following multiple high-profile flops in 2024 like “The Crow,” “Megalopolis,” and “Borderlands”. It’s biggest film of 2025 so far, “Ballerina,” pulled in just $131.4 million from a $90 million budget.
