The earliest box-office tracking estimates are coming in for “Weapons” and “Barbarian” filmmaker Zach Cregger’s new “Resident Evil” film and… they’re looking good.
According to Global Box-Office, the film is charting 51% awareness and 52% interest on Greenlight Analytics (aka. Quorum), with the outlet claiming that tracking suggests it could be the biggest domestic debut for both Cregger and the “Resident Evil” franchise.
They don’t give a number, but the highest opening weekend for the franchise was “Resident Evil: Afterlife” with $26.7 million while for Cregger it was “Weapons” with $43.5 million.
Box-Office Pro is being more conservative, claiming it will come in just under “Weapons” with an opening in the $30-40 million range.
The only other film opening in the next few weeks doing that kind of business is “Practical Magic 2” the week before, which is tipped to debut in the $35-45 million range.
Tickets for the new “Resident Evil” film go online next week, and new clips are emerging showing some scenes from a first-person perspective.
Austin Abrams stars in the film which is slated to open in cinemas on September 18th.
