It was expected this weekend’s box-office figures for the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film would be unpredictable and now that assessment is playing out.
The film reportedly pulled in $37.8 million on Friday according to industry estimates, though AMC is pegging that higher at $39 million. Both figures include the $2.8 million in last-minute announced Thursday night previews.
Either way, that makes it the second-biggest October opening day ever behind only “Joker” ($39.3 million) and ahead of both “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” ($37.4 million) and 2018’s “Halloween” ($33 million).
Now, overall estimates for the weekend seem to be cooling down from the overly rosy predictions of recent weeks. The three-day haul from Friday to Sunday domestically is now being revised down slightly towards a potential $90-109 million three-day haul.
Wherever it lands in that range, it would give the film the second-biggest October start sandwiched once again between those aforementioned films about a crazy clown and a carnivorous symbiote.
Right now, no one is sure of how front-loaded the film is with predictions for a Saturday drop ranging from just 1% to up to 20%. Even at the lowest end of expectations, it’ll still be the best opening film since “Barbie” and the biggest start ever for a movie distributed by a movie theater chain.
The film has also scored a rare A+ CinemaScore in exit polls, joining its 100% critics/99% audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes and 84/100 critics/8.3/10 audience score on Metacritic.
