It took years, but finally it seemed fans of “Community” would get their wish with the six-season series being followed up with a movie.
Creator Dan Harmon was at work on the script, and it seemed as though everyone, bar Chevy Chase, would be back to shoot. Then the WGA and SAG strikes happened, and the possibility seemed less sure.
With the writer’s strike having ended and with the actor’s guild in negotiations starting today that could see the potential end of their strike soon, attention has turned back to the “Community” film.
Speaking to THR, Harmon confirms he was able to get commitments from every cast member (except Chase) and managed to get everyone’s schedules to sync up so they could all film together.
With the delays due to the strikes though, getting everyone’s schedules to align once again will be tricky: “By the time we can re-coordinate, what are the odds that everyone’s schedule is going to once again align?”.
He revealed before the strikes grounded things, the plan was to shoot the film in Atlanta to ensure co-star Donald Glover could be there and he says “Donald was stoked.” Also weighing heavily on him are fan expectations and how, after years of waiting, they may not be happy:
“I hate to say how terrified I am to do it wrong because there’s a part of me that knows that that fear cannot possibly result in a good thing.
And you’re not going to get anywhere doing an impression of what you think you should do or what you think they want, but I really don’t want to do it wrong, and it is truly terrifying.
But then I’m holding onto the hope that being honest with myself about how scared I am is at least a way to break the cycle.”
Whether this will work out will likely depend on several factors, the biggest being that when the actor’s strike ends, the entire industry faces a scheduling nightmare as productions race to get going again.
Should it get made, the “Community” film will stream exclusively on Peacock.
