HBO’s “Real Time” Is First Post-Strike Return

With the writer’s strike now officially over, HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” looks to be the first late-night talk show to make it back on the air as a new episode as the series is set to air this Friday.

Maher had originally planned to return last Friday and intended to move forward without writers and without his show’s usual segments like New Rules and his monologue.

He then delayed plans when it became clear the WGA and AMPTP had resumed serious negotiations. The show host drew controversy for his remarks about the strikes during the nearly five-month-long industrial action.

In a post on Twitter, Maher confirms the show and its writers will all be back in time for Friday’s episode which will mark the first new episode for the series since April 28th – an episode which had Elon Musk as a guest star.

Other talk shows are expected to return in the coming weeks as showrunners set staff to return. Talk shows fall under a network code deal which isn’t a part of the current SAG-AFTRA strike and so can now come back with the shows expected to return simultaneously sometime next month.
