Though Barbenheimer dominates the headlines, A24’s Australian horror film “Talk to Me” from YouTubers turned first-time directors Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou has made some of its own history this weekend.
Made for just $4.5 million, the critically acclaimed feature pulled in over $10 million in its opening weekend in the United States. That’s the distributor’s biggest opening weekend since 2018’s “Hereditary” with $13.6 million.
The film has scored stunning reviews, sitting at a 95% (7.8/10) with critics on Rotten Tomatoes whilst its CinemaScore of B+ is very high for indie horror and A24’s best wide-release CinemaScore ever across all genres.
Sophie Wilde, Joe Bird, Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, Chris Alosio, Zoe Terakes, and Miranda Otto star in the story about a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand. They become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.
A24 will release Thomas Hardiman’s murder mystery film “Medusa Deluxe,” and the Zac Efron-led wrestling family drama “The Iron Claw” later this year.
Meanwhile the Philippous are already set to helm the new film adaptation of Capcom fighting game series “Street Fighter”.
