Sony-Marvel’s “El Muerto” Pulled & On Hold

Sony Pictures

The upcoming Sony Universe “Spider-Man” spin-off “El Muerto,” starring rapper Bad Bunny, has been put on indefinite hold and has been pulled from Sony’s release schedule.

The project had not even begun filming, so making its previously slated January 12th 2024 release date essentially impossible. According to THR, the project fell victim to the ongoing writers strike as the script needed additional work but those services could not be rendered in time.

Another factor is Bad Bunny’s touring schedule which was firmed up while the movie was stalled. The fate of the entire project is now unclear, as is how much longer Bad Bunny can remain attached to it.

“Desierto” and “Chupa” director Jonas Cuaron, son of Alfonso Cuaron, was to direct the film, which was to have been the first live-action Marvel project to star a Latino lead – the character is an antihero and the son of a luchador.

Casting was still to take place but Marvin Jones III, who played DC villain Tobias Whale in The CW’s “Black Lightning” series, was being circled for the role of the crime lord known as Tombstone – a character he already voiced in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. Meanwhile, professional wrestler Mercedes Varnado (aka Sasha Banks) was also up for a role.

Sony also shifted around a few other films as a result – moving up the GameStop feature “Dumb Money” by a month to September 22nd, whilst “The Book of Clarence” was pushed back three months to take the old date “El Muerto” abandoned.
