Amy Schumer Talks Her “Barbie” Exit

One of Summer’s most anticipated films has to be Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” film, a gloriously garishly pink-packed fantasy comedy that both pays loving tribute to and satirises its subject.

The project has long been in the works over the years, with various different versions on the way before it settled on the current one, which Gerwig penned with her partner and fellow filmmaker Noah Baumbach.

Arguably the most famous prior incarnation was the one which had comedian Amy Schumer attached to star as Barbie. Schumer appeared on yesterday’s episode of Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” with Andy Cohen, where the topic of the film came up.

Asked why she left an earlier version of the film, Schumer joked that “they said I was too thin” before going into a bit more detail about why she exited:

” I can’t wait to see the movie, I think it looks awesome. I think we said it was scheduling conflicts. That’s what we said. But it really was just like, creative differences.

But there’s a new team behind it and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool, so I will be seeing this movie.”

Cohen then asked if the version she saw wasn’t “feminist and cool,” to which she responded: “Yeah”.

A year ago, she revealed in an interview with THR that “they definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it”.

At that time, she added her character would have been an ‘inventor’, but the studio wanted her invention to be a shoe made out of Jell-O.

Margot Robbie stars in Gerwig’s latest as a Barbie who realizes something is off and heads to the real world – taking Ryan Gosling’s Ken in tow. Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Ncuti Gatwa and Emma Mackey co-star.

“Barbie” hits cinemas on July 21st. Schumer will be seen in a few months in both “Trolls Band Together” and “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story”.
