Robbie & Gosling’s “Ocean’s 11” Prequel Details

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. Pictures’ untitled “Ocean’s Eleven” prequel project, which re-teams “Barbie” stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has been scheduled to begin later this month on June 30th according to Production List.

Filming on the heist comedy will reportedly take place in France for a story set in 1960s Europe and serves as something of a remake of the original 1960 film that starred Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Angie Dickinson, among others.

Jay Roach helms from a screenplay written by Carrie Solomon. Writer Lindsey Bahr for AP News spoke with Roach about the movie and managed to garner some new information which she posted on Twitter about what takes place.

The story reportedly unfolds in Monte Carlo in 1962 during the Monaco Grand Prix. Roach dubs it an “old-fashioned epic love story/adventure disguised as a heist,” with said heist taking place on the private yacht of a famed shipping magnate.

Roach adds that Hitchcock’s “Notorious” and “To Catch a Thief” are big inspirations here, and it aims to be a “big, big cinematic spectacle”. Like “Notorious,” the aim here is a story in which Robbie and Gosling’s characters “don’t trust each other, and they need to trust each other”.

Gary Ross, Josey McNamara, Michelle Graham, Tom Ackerley, and Olivia Milch produce. The Steven Soderbergh-directed “Ocean’s 11” trilogy from the early 2000s already had a spin-off in the form of “Ocean’s 8”. The franchise currently has a combined worldwide gross of over $1 billion at the box office.
