Director’s Guild & AMPTP Reach New Deal

The Directors Guild (DGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reportedly reached a tentative deal on a new three-year labour contract following less than a month of negotiations.

The agreement will reportedly include gains in wages and benefits, streaming residuals, and A.I. protection amongst other things. It arrives after the DGA and AMPTP spent all day Saturday at the negotiating table in an effort to avoid a potential stike.

Jon Avnet, the DGA’s Negotiations Committee chief, says they have “concluded a truly historic deal” with significant improvements for directors, assistant directors and unit production managers.

There’s also “advances on wages, streaming residuals, safety, creative rights and diversity” along with essential protections for issues like artificial intelligence for the DGA’s 19,000 members.

One of the big inclusions is global SVOD residuals which will be paid based on the number of international subscribers – a 76% increase in foreign residuals for the biggest streaming services.

Union leaders must lay out the gains and compromises in the contract to members in coming days before members ultimately participate in a ratification vote which is set for Tuesday this week. The deal could also offer a template for the AMPTP and the Writer’s Guild (WGA) to help in their negotiations.
