Filmmaker Zack Snyder is out promoting “The Last Photograph,” his new low-budget and back-to-basics indie drama that was shot in Colombia. There’s no slow motion or green screen, and Snyder did multiple duties, not just as director but as cinematographer as well.
In a new interview about the film at THR, he’s gone into some of his past work, including his time at DC and a look at why his Snyder-verse take on DC heroes didn’t quite work as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to Snyder, Marvel figured out how to bend its characters into a very marketable way. That’s not the approach he wanted to take. Rather, he wanted to get at an inner truth at the core of these characters:
“[Marvel is] like an amusement park ride, right? The ups, the drops, the kind of cruising part, and then another drop. At the end, you’re like, ‘Wow, that was crazy, that was awesome.’ I had no interest in that. And you know, maybe that was a mistake. But I don’t think that way. I can’t do that. I’d rather just kind of talk about the mythology of them. And maybe that’s not as fun.”
Asked about Gunn’s “Superman,” he revealed he hasn’t seen it yet: “I just haven’t gotten around to it yet,” and quickly added he’s a supporter of Gunn’s and wants the DC division to do well.
As for what’s next, the trade confirms he’s still set to remake John Carpenter’s classic “Escape from New York” which, like the original, will be set in 1997. He says: “It is genre-defining and genre-defying at the same time because no one’s really been able to duplicate the kind of audacity that the movie has.”
