In a year packed with major studio blockbusters that are running closer to three hours rather than two, the upcoming “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” will mark something of a refreshing change.
Collider reports that the film, the seventh overall movie in the “Transformers” franchise, will clock in at just 117 minutes. That puts it very much on par with the prior film, Travis Knight’s “Bumblebee,” which is the shortest of the series to date at 114 minutes.
By comparison, the five Michael Bay-directed “Transformers” films have all come in the 144-165 minute range. Similarly, a bunch of blockbusters this year are also going long including “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at 140 minutes, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” at 142 minutes, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3” at 149 minutes, “John Wick: Chapter 4” at 169 minutes, Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” at around 180 minutes, and Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” at 206 minutes.
‘Rise of the Beasts’ is set in the 1990s and is described as a globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduces a whole new faction of Transformers – the Maximals – to join them as allies in the existing battle for Earth. The film will also introduce the Predacons and Terrorcons.
Anthony Ramos plays Noah, an ex-military electronics expert who lives with and supports his family in Brooklyn, while Dominque Fishback plays Elena, an artifact researcher at a museum.
They lead the cast, including Ron Perlman, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, Pete Davidson, Michaela Jae Rodriguez and Peter Cullen all lending their voices to the Transformers.
Steven Caple Jr. helms the film, which will release in theaters on June 9th.
