“Mario” Beats “Margaret,” “George” At Box-Office

Nintendo and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” still reigned at the box office in its fourth weekend of release, holding off smaller theatrical newcomers “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” “Sisu,” and “Big George Foreman.”

The animated adventure will become the first release of 2023 to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office by the end of this weekend – around 26 days after it opened.

It’s projected to score a $37.5 million domestic weekend gross and drop only 37% from last weekend. By the end of the weekend, it’s expected the film will sit at a total of around $487.5 million gross in North America and $533 million internationally.

“Evil Dead Rise” will come in second with a drop of around 50% expected for a $12.3 million second weekend. That’s a better drop than the 2013 “Evil Dead” remake, which fell 63% and will sit at a domestic total of $44.5 million by the weekend’s end.

‘Margaret’ is an adaptation of Judy Blume’s best-selling 1970 novel and is headed for a $6 million third-place finish for the weekend – that’s a decidedly underwhelming result despite solid reviews from both critics and audiences with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore.

Disney’s re-release of “Return of the Jedi” is on track for a $4.9 million haul for the weekend and a fourth-place position. “John Wick: Chapter 4” will sit in fifth place with $4.5 million; its total domestic gross should surpass $175 million by Sunday. That film has achieved $373 million worldwide to date.

Finnish action film “Sisu” and Indian epic “Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two” are both on track for around $3 million each for the weekend, whilst the George Foreman biopic didn’t even crack the top ten with $2.8 million.

The box office should see a shake-up next weekend as Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” arrives to kick-start the Summer box office.
