“Velma” S2 In The Works At HBO Max

HBO Max

A second season of HBO Max’s adult animated series “Velma,” a spin-off reimagining of “Scooby-Doo,” is already in development at the streamer.

The series traces Velma Dinkley’s origin and place as the underappreciated brains of Mystery Inc. Mindy Kaling created and voiced the series alongside Glenn Howerton stars as Fred, Constance Wu is Daphne and Sam Richardson is Shaggy.

The animated series made its debut earlier this year and became a lightning rod for discussion and derision. Critics reviews were mixed and audience scores weren’t just bad, they were legendarily bad with the show the lowest-rated TV series across the entire IMDb and its audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes at just 7%.

Yet it kept people watching enough that the streamer is seemingly quite happy with the results and the production team is already at work on a second season.

Channing Dungey, the chairman and CEO of Warner Television Group, reportedly revealed the news as part of a feature at Deadline where she discussed the company’s list of comedies ranging from the successful “Night Court” revival to awards darling “Ted Lasso”.

Whilst there’s no direct quote from Dungey, the trade indicates her “team is working on a second season of Scooby-Doo spinoff Velma, an adult animated comedy that comes from Mindy Kaling.”

It’s not clear how far development is along on season two, but it is happening. The ten-episode first season recently wrapped with audiences now able to binge the series.

Guest stars for the first season run included Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, Fortune Feimster, Yvonne Orji, Sarayu Blue, Nicole Byer, Ming-Na Wen, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, Kulap Vilaysak and NBA All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns.
