“Last of Us” Episode 5 Releasing Early

HBO

HBO has announced that the fifth episode of its TV series adaptation of “The Last of Us” is arriving two days early. The hit survival series typically airs Sunday nights simulcast between HBO and HBO Max.

However its run is set to hit two major events also set to take place on Sunday nights in the next few weeks – Super Bowl LVII next Sunday (February 12th), and then the Oscars on March 12th – the same day as the show’s season finale.

In the case of the former, HBO has opted to move away from the big game and will instead release the show’s fifth episode two days earlier on HBO Max on Friday, February 10th at the same time of day (9pm) as usual. The linear HBO airing will still roll out on the Sunday in its usual timeslot.

The move makes sense as the fourth and fifth episodes are somewhat interlinked. Blending the ‘Pittsburgh’ and ‘The Suburbs’ chapters of the game, the series switches out the location for Kansas City in Missouri, and FEDRA for a rebel group called Hunters led by Melanie Lynskey’s Kathleen – an original character for the series.

That said, they still include Henry and Sam from the games with both actors coming more into play in the fifth episode. The fourth episode also included the new character Perry, played by Jeffrey Pierce who voices Joel’s brother Tommy in the games.

The series has already been renewed for a second season which has yet to begin production. Check out the fifth episode trailer and the fourth episode featurette below:
