Disney+ has cancelled its Tony Hale-led “The Mysterious Benedict Society” after two seasons.
The series followed four gifted orphans who each possess a unique skill and are therefore summoned to a boarding school known as the Institute after winning a scholarship.
They are recruited by the eccentric Nicholas Benedict for a dangerous mission to save the world from a global crisis known as The Emergency.
They soon learn the headmaster of the Institute, Mr. Benedict’s identical twin brother Ledroptha Curtain, is behind the crisis, which involves mind control.
The series also starred MaameYaa Boafo and Ryan Hurst as Benedict’s other associates, and Mystic Inscho, Seth Carr, Emmy DeOliveira, and Marta Kessler as the four children.
The project hailed from “The Invitation” and “Destroyer” writers Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, show run by “Smallville” alum Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin, and adapted from the young adult books by Trenton Lee Stewart.
Hay Hay broke the news of the series cancellation on Twitter, saying:
“Dear friends, season 2 will mark the end of The Mysterious Benedict Society’s journey on Disney+. We love everyone who helped make this truly special and indeed, life-affirming experience happen. No regrets — so proud of what we made!
You made it wonderful and we loved every minute. The beauty of streaming is that the show lives on Disney+ and you can find it whenever you want to visit. Spoiler alert for how the story ends: the kids stay friends forever.”
The first season aired June 2021, and the second premiered last October.
