Actress-turned-filmmaker Greta Gerwig has so far built up an impressive directorial resume. The critical success of “Lady Bird” led to both praise and financial success for her “Little Women” adaptation.
Her next feature is the “Barbie” live-action film which has become one of 2023’s most anticipated titles. Now, an unexpected project seems to have landed in her lap.
What’s On Netflix reports that Gerwig is being eyed to direct two new “The Chronicles of Narnia” films for Netflix, based on the works of C.S. Lewis.
Netflix took over the franchise in 2018 when it announced plans to team up with The C.S. Lewis Company in a multi-year deal to produce series and movies based on the books.
A year later, “Coco” co-writer Matthew Alrich boarded the franchise as a ‘creative architect’ to oversee all development moving forward. Since then, it has been quiet until today.
Disney adapted the second and most famous of the books, “The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe” back in 2005. A sequel based on the fourth book “Prince Caspian” followed, and then Walden Media adapted the fifth book “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” in 2010.
It’s not clear which of the seven books will be adapted. Previously the sixth book, “The Silver Chair,” was adapted for television. The first book, “The Magician’s Nephew,” is fairly standalone, whilst the third book, “A Horse and his Boy,” is often considered too ‘small’ a story to adapt. The final book, “The Last Battle,” essentially relies on knowledge of all the other books to work.
Gerwig’s “Barbie” film is expected to arrive in theaters on July 21st 2023.
