After the previous title “Call of Duty: Vanguard” reportedly had one of the worst launches for the franchise in years, Activision has turned things around with the highly lucrative debut of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”.
According to the publisher, this year’s entry in the long-running multiplayer military FPS series pulled in $800 million in launch sales in three days. That makes it the top opening weekend sales of any game in “Call of Duty” history and the highest-grossing entertainment opening of the year.
It beats out the previous record-holder in 2011’s “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” which sold $775 million in launch sales in its first five days after release. The game has also reportedly set new franchise records for the number of unique players and hours played through its first three days for a premium “Call of Duty” game.
Though not confirmed, it’s believed Activision will skip a new mainline “Call of Duty” game in 2023 – the first time it has skipped a year in two decades. It’s expected that hole will be filled by new premium content, including a campaign expansion for the new “Modern Warfare 2” along with a ‘greatest hits’ pack containing multiplayer maps from a variety of classic “Call of Duty” games.
Both the first season of live content for the game, and Warzone 2.0, are both launching on November 16th.
