DC and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Black Adam” came in ahead of expectations with its launch at the box-office this weekend.
The Dwayne Johnson-led vehicle was last week projected to earn between $55-60 million domestically in its opening weekend, but has ended up scoring an estimated $67 million haul.
That marks the biggest domestic opening of Dwayne Johnson’s career outside of the “Fast & Furious” franchise. In addition, the film opened to $73 million from 77 markets for a global start of $140 million.
Though seemingly a modest start for a big-budget superhero film, Johnson’s films have strong post-opening weekends with minimal decline. The film had mixed reviews and only OK B+ CinemaScore.
The Julia Roberts and George Clooney-led rom-com “Ticket to Paradise” came in second, also with a better-than-expected $16.3 million in its domestic debut. That follows on from the $80.3 million overseas the film has earned over the past few weeks and is seen as a very good result.
“Smile” stayed smiling in third place for a fourth weekend with $8.4 million for a domestic total of $84.3 million and a global total of $166.2 million.
Not everyone fared so well. Universal’s “Halloween Ends” plunged 80% in its second weekend to $8 million for a domestic total of $54.7 million and $82.1 million globally. It is considered one of the worst week-to-week drops ever recorded for a film that was #1 the prior weekend.
In limited release, “The Banshees of Inisherin” hit four screens with not just some of the year’s best reviews but a stellar per-screen average of $45,250. Bloody Disgusting’s “Terrifier 2” meanwhile continues its strong run – passing $5 million at the box office from a $250,000 budget.
