Iconic Australian singer Olivia Newton-John has died. The 73-year-old singer and actress passed away peacefully Monday morning at her ranch in Southern California, according to a social media posting from her husband, John Easterling.
A cause of death was not given, but Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer in the early 1990s which surfaced for a third time in 2017.
Born in England and raised in Australia’s Melbourne, Newton-John sold more than 100 million albums and had nearly 40 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 during her five decades in music, including the song “Physical”, which to this day remains synonymous with the 1980s.
Things really took off for her when she was cast opposite John Travolta in 1978’s musical hit “Grease”, which spawned countless smash hit songs like “You’re the One That I Want” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You”.
Two years later, she followed that up with the musical “Xanadu” which delivered several more hits, including the title song and “Magic”. She also reunited with Travolta in “Two of a Kind” and occasionally popped up in films like “A Few Best Men” and “Sharknado 5” or TV series like “Murphy Brown”.
Newton-John has been an activist for environmental and animal rights issues. Our sincerest condolences go out to her family and friends.
