After nearly four decades on screens, Australian soap “Neighbours” has been officially cancelled.
The writing was on the wall last month when UK Channel 5, which funds much of the show’s budget and was pulling in 1.4 million viewers every day for the network, opted not to renew the series’ broadcast agreement.
Series producer Fremantle Media began a search for a new broadcaster but has failed to find a new home in the weeks since. Now in a statement, Fremantle says it will cease production on the series in June this year.
More than 60,000 fans have signed a petition to try and save the daytime soap, while many of its stars, past and present, expressed their devastation at the news.
Actors Peter O’Brien and Ian Smith are set to return for the last few episodes as those behind the scenes are working hard to make the final few weeks of the series special.
