Florence Pugh, Julia Garner, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young and newcomer Emma Laird along with musicians Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira are all said to be in the running for the Madonna biopic at Universal Pictures.
Casting director Carmen Cuba says the list has been whittled down over the course of several months with the audition process said to be “gruelling” as hopefuls engage in up to 11-hour-a-day intense choreography sessions along with singing auditions and readings with Madonna herself heavily involved.
Once someone is selected, they will likely still have to go through several months worth of intense training ahead of a potential start of production date – though the feature doesn’t have a green light from the studio as yet.
The film, which Madonna is directing and co-writing with Erin Cressida Wilson, currently culminates with her landmark 1990 Blonde Ambition tour and requires dancing and singing sequences. Amy Pascal is on board to produce.
