Anticipation is high for Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix Resurrections” even as many questions remain over just where the story of this franchise will go.

Though ostensibly the fourth film in the series, this is certainly not a reboot but nor is it a straight sequel either. Some characters are coming back, most with their same actors, but things are still quite different.

Then there’s the fact that, as the trailer showcased, scenes from the original “The Matrix” film can be seen as an apparent film within the world of this new entry. So just what is it?

David Mitchell, the “Cloud Atlas” author who co-wrote the new ‘Matrix’ film with Aleksandar Hemon and Wachowski, spoke with a Greek newspaper To Vima recently. Translated by Showbiz CheatSheet, he says he’s seen the film and wants to clear one thing up:

“I saw the film in Berlin in September. It’s really good. I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not.

It’s certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three “Matrix” [movies] that preceded [it] in a really ingenious way.

It’s a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieves a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters.”

Mitchell also confirmed Wachowski’s own comments that the film is essentially a creative response to the grief of her losing both her parents a few months apart several years ago.

“The Matrix Resurrections” opens in cinemas and on HBO Max on December 22nd.
