“Tenet” Advance Sales Outpacing “Dunkirk”

Movie ticket pre-sales for Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” are reportedly outpacing his previous movies “Interstellar” and “Dunkirk” at the same point in their advance sales cycle in the U.S., U.K. and Australia reports Deadline.

Movio Cinema Analytics revealed the news, saying there has been significantly more single ticket purchases for “Tenet” (55%) compared to “Dunkirk” (20%) and “Interstellar” (47%). Movio measured the UK and Australia’s numbers two days before the pic’s opening this week in those countries, and for the U.S. a week prior to its first previews on August 31st.

Domestically 45% of the pre-sales are from Southern states, up compared to “Dunkirk” (35%) and “Interstellar” (28%) due to those regions being re-opened. “Tenet” pre-sales are also apparently underperforming in metropolitan markets at 22% compared to “Dunkirk” (34%) and “Interstellar” (39%).

That’s probably due to big advance ticket sales markets like New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco are closed along with Seattle, Miami, Portland and Philadelphia in addition to numerous full states.

In Australia, “Tenet” pre-sales are over five times that of “Dunkirk” and over ten times that of “Interstellar,” and that’s with the country’s second most populous state Victoria having closed its cinemas due to the virus’ resurgence. In the UK, pre-sales are over 50% ahead of “Dunkirk” and nearly six times that of “Interstellar”.

Both those films opened to around $50 million each domestically over their launch weekend. No U.S. opening estimates have been set yet, but a 40 market international opening is tipped to bring in $25 million. Also analysts expect the film’s returns to be more a marathon than a sprint with the film likely to have only a small opening but also long legs that go on for weeks.
