“New Mutants” Runtime, Sequel, Reshoot Talk

It’s still not clear when the long-delayed “The New Mutants” will truly arrive but for now the plan is still very much for a theatrical release on August 28th with no plans to go to Disney+ or other streaming outlet anytime in the near future.

Cast and crew took part in a 30-minute panel on Thursday for the virtual Comic-Con @ Home event where a whole bunch of new details were revealed. First up, the film’s final runtime is said to clock in at 98 minutes with director Josh Boone saying the film was “never more than 104 even at its longest”.

He adds his assembly cut, the one he made before doing any editing, was “probably 20 minutes longer”. However all those deleted scenes are being put together to be included as special features and most of them will be “cute character moments that I think fans will like”.

The film is now a standalone, not a potential franchise launcher like it was when Boone made the film at Fox. Boone previously revealed he wanted Antonio Banderas for the Brazil-set second film, and now he’s told Collider that the film would have also had the characters Warlock and Karma in it, and a third one would have adapted the Inferno comics storyline.

He also spoke about reshoot rumors over the years, telling Slashfilm: “We never got to reshoot anything. We never got to do even pickups, which normal films do. We were really completely shut down during the merger and that was it.”

The panel also showed off the film’s opening scene and a new trailer, both of which can be seen below.
