Beijing Cinemas Remain Shut After New Cases

Chinese authorities have announced that cinemas in Beijing must remain shut for the time being after three new coronavirus cases were discovered in the capital – nearly two months since the city’s last case was diagnosed.

A Ta Xicheng district resident who had not left the city in the past two weeks was diagnosed on Thursday, while two additional new cases in a different district were announced Friday.

In an attempt to boost prevention efforts, cinemas and other indoor entertainment venues are to remain shut. Chinese cinemas have been shut since late January, as a result thousands of them have gone bankrupt and it’s no clear how many will be left by the time they re-open.

The move also means cinemas in other regions of the country will be wary of resuming business even if they are currently at low coronavirus risk. Cinemas in Canada and the U.S. meanwhile have already begun re-opening, despite their ongoing struggle with the coronavirus.
