A while back came word from original “Candyman” actor Tony Todd himself that he is returning to the franchise for the upcoming Jordan Peele-produced new entry – a film described as more of a ‘spiritual sequel’ than a reboot of the series.
How Todd would be involved wasn’t clear though as, at the time, it wasn’t expected that he would play the titular character again. Now, Bloody Disgusting reports that Todd will indeed reprise his role as the Candyman in the new film.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Aquaman”) leads the cast of the project which is being helmed by Nia DaCosta (“Little Woods”) from a script co-written with Peele. The film returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
“Candyman” is slated to hit cinemas June 12th 2020.
