A race is on between two biopics about Zelda Fitzgerald, the schizophrenic Jazz Age icon and wife of author F. Scott Fitzgerald who died in a fire at a hospital in North Carolina seven decades ago.
The other day came the announcement that Jennifer Lawrence would play her in a biopic titled “Zelda” in the works which has Ron Howard eyeing to direct for Cross Creek Pictures. Emma Frost (“The White Queen”) is penning the script.
Today comes word that Scarlett Johansson is linked to her own Zelda biopic titled “The Beautiful and the Damned” for Millennium Films. Hanna Weg (“Septembers of Shiraz”) wrote the screenplay with a director to be locked soon.
Johansson’s film has an advantage in that its project has secured the cooperation of the Fitzgerald estate and will incorporate newly unearthed transcripts from a sanatorium in which Zelda Fitzgerald was confined that indicate her husband misappropriated his wife’s ideas as his own.
They aren’t all though as Christina Ricci is also playing her in a new Amazon series “Z: The Beginning of Everything” which is in the works.
