Johnson Scores “Alita: Battle Angel” Key Role

Keean Johnson (“Nashville”) has nabbed the highly coveted male love interest role opposite Rosa Salazar in James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation of the popular manga “Alita: Battle Angel” at 20th Century Fox

Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrap yard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals.

Johnson plays Hugo, a young man who teaches Alita how to play a gladiator-style game called Motorball but who also has a secret side job stealing robot parts. Christoph Waltz, Jackie Earl Haley and Ed Skrein also star.

Johnson beat out the likes of Avan Jogia, Douglas Booth, Jack Lowden and Noah Silver for the role. Rodriguez is directing and Cameron producing with his partner Jon Landau.
