Like the seasons, the U.S. box-office about to get colder as several major titles opening in October are on course for quieter domestic box-office openings than the hits of the Summer.
News came last week via Puck News’ Matthew Belloni that the Tom Cruise-led “Digger” has appeared on tracking service NRG with a likely $20 million opening weekend.
The film’s official budget is at $130 million, though various sources place it notably higher than that, so that debut number isn’t great. Warners is likely hoping for another “One Battle After Another,” which debuted to just $22 million but went on to solid box-office and awards glory.
That will depend heavily upon the reception to the film, with social media reaction expected to arrive tomorrow as tickets go on sale. Full reviews won’t be coming until well into next week.
The talk comes as Box-Office Theory has released projections for the next five weeks and, from the looks of it, the two potentially biggest films for October will be the Jessica Chastain-led “Other Mommy” and the “Street Fighter” film with both tipped to open at around $30 million each.
Their projections for “Digger” are more rosy at $23.5 million, while the DC Studios film “Clayface” is expected to debut at a very similar number.
Others like “Veity,” “Whalefall,” “The Social Reckoning,” “Primetime,” “Forgotten Island” and “Heart of the Beast” are all expected to have debuts in the teens. No word on other October titles like “Wildwood” and “Wicker”.
The talk comes as the box-office made another headline today with “Coyote vs. Acme” passing the $100 million mark worldwide.
