“Nosferatu,” “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman” filmmaker Robert Eggers has set up a new film adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” at Focus Features.
Focus beat out the likes of A24, Sony and Warner Bros. Pictures in a bidding war for the project, their third straight collaboration with the filmmaker following “Nosferatu” and the upcoming “Werwulf”.
Eggers will both direct the feature and produce, no other producers have yet been announced. The adaptation will feature actors speaking in Olde English
Written in the 1590s, the tragic romance tells the ill-fated story of the titular young lovers who hail from two warring families, the Capulets and the Montagues, in the city of Verona, Italy.
It remains arguably the single most famous play of the author and has been adapted to the screen many times, including Baz Luhrmann’s notable 1996 modern-day-set adaptation “Romeo + Juliet”.
The new film is said to have a production budget a little under $80 million total and will be Eggers’ next production.
