“Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” remake director Fede Alvarez has come onboard the reshoots of the Lionsgate sci-fi drama “Chaos Walking” starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley.
Doug Liman, the original director, remains on board and is directing the new shoot currently underway in Atlanta which is described as ‘additional photography’. Liman himself is reportedly the one who asked for assistance and Alvarez, a fan of his work, is helping – acting as a ‘consultant’ and giving extensive notes on the script along with plotting new material with Liman and more.
The new filming goes beyond standard reshoots with an estimated spend of around $15 million on this new round which is expected to last at least three weeks and have been in the works for a while.
The hiring comes following a report the other week which suggested the original cut of the film was deemed ‘unreleasable’ by studio insiders, though Liman is famous for films with troubled productions turning into critical and commercial smashes thanks to skilled post and reshoot work (ala “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”)
An adaptation of the Patrick Ness sci-fi young-adult novel, the story is set in a future society where women have been killed off by a virus. The film is seen as a major bet for the studio desperate to recreate the success it had with the “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” franchises.
