While Disney & Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” will likely remain king at the box-office this weekend, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures are set to make a fairly large dent with “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” which is looking to pull in $50-55 million domestically and a further $90-120 million overseas – giving the film a global launch of somewhere around $160 million.
Domestically the film is expected to come in second to ‘Endgame’ which is on track for its own $75-85 million third weekend. Outside the States, China is the big market where “Detective Pikachu” should take off this weekend with estimates ranging from $40M-$60M locally there.
Good tracking for “Detective Pikachu” has surprised rivals and while family audiences have shown keen interest, there’s hope it will play broader. Reviews for the film are good but not great, mostly indicating it will please the fanbase but not much beyond. Costing a fairly expensive $150 million to make, it will need to make $400 million+ to be in profit.
Domestically the other films opening this week include “The Hustle” with $12 million, “Poms” with $7-10 million, and “Tolkien” which is expected to only earn a few million.
