Numbers are coming in for Illumination and Universal Pictures’ “Minions & Monsters” and it seems, at least domestically, the audience is a little tired of it.
Deadline reports that the film, the seventh overall in the “Despicable Me” franchise, pulled in $16.4 million on Friday and is headed for a three-day haul of $39.5 million and a five-day holiday weekend haul of $64.5 million.
That’s on the lower end of expectations which ranged anywhere from $60-90 million earlier this week after the film pulled in $13.8 million on its opening day on Wednesday. Internationally, it is faring better and has pulled in a further $100 million to date.
“Supergirl” is in utter free fall, the film slipping to fourth place with a three-day total of $9 million – an astonishing 76% drop from last weekend (worse than the 73% drop of “The Flash”). It looks to hit $57.8 million domestically by the end of Sunday, but there’s no way around it – it bombed and bombed hard.
“Toy Story 5” is coming in second place, with the Disney-Pixar film headed for a $32-36 million third weekend and an astonishing total of $371.3 million so far.
A surprisingly strong debut came from Angel Studios’ “Young Washington” which is ahead of projections and is coming in with $18 million for the three-day. The George Washington biopic made headlines for its director being quite upfront about how and when in the film it used generative AI.
Rounding out the top five was “Disclosure Day” with $5.5 million, bringing its total to $104.8 million.
“Obsession,” meanwhile, saw a drop of 47% in its eighth week, the title earning $5.1 million. That’s down 47% from last weekend – its steepest drop to date – but that’s being blamed on the film also hitting PVOD earlier this week.
“Jackass: Best and Last” saw its fortunes fade fast, dropping 65% in its second weekend for a $2.95 million total for the three-day.
