Johnny Depp In Talks For Sixth “Pirates”

Disney

Six months ago, producer Jerry Bruckheimer offered the most recent update on a potential sixth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, which seemed to finally be getting some steam behind it.

Just weeks earlier, Oscar nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns (“1917”) was reportedly in talks to write the screenplay, while Bruckheimer confirmed to ET that he’d “met with Margot Robbie about the next Pirates film”.

Robbie was originally meant to lead a “Pirates of the Caribbean” spin-off, but that didn’t come together. Either way, it sounds like Bruckheimer wants her for the next major entry, and new Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro was keen to get the project moving.

Cut to D23 this weekend and Bruckheimer, speaking with Deadline, he explained: “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.”

Other insiders told the outlet that the new film will shift the focus to Robbie’s character as the protagonist, with Depp returning to being more of a major side character – more akin to how he was in the first film.

The fifth entry grossed $795.9M worldwide, the lowest of the series to date, and the overall franchise has grossed $4.5 billion at the global box office.
