Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are set to star in a fifth “Lethal Weapon” according to producer Dan Lin this week.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Producers Roundtable on Tuesday, Dan confirmed he and director Richard Donner are working on bringing the action buddy cop franchise back for another outing – a full 22 years after Detective Martin Riggs and his partner Detective Roger Murtaugh last appeared in 1998’s “Lethal Weapon 4”.
Dan says: “We’re trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie. And Dick Donner’s coming back. The original cast is coming back. And it’s just amazing. The story is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it’s about the script.”
The original “Lethal Weapon” was released in 1987, more recently it was revived as a TV reboot that ran for three seasons and wrapped last year.
Donner teased the prospect of a fifth film back in 2018 to Maltin on Movies, dubbing it “Lethal Finale” and saying it is very dark and emotional. However, he didn’t think it would get made as Warner Bros. Pictures and their legal department were “doing their old-fashioned tricks” when it came to negotiations.
