Cristian Mungiu’s “Fjord,” starring Sebastian Stan, took the top prize of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night.
It marks the seventh consecutive top prize from the Croisette for U.S. distributor Neon – a winning streak that began in 2019 with “Parasite” and run through “Titane,” “Triangle of Sadness,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Anora” and “It Was Just an Accident”.
Mungiu previously won the top honour in 2007 for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”. Shot in English and Norwegian, “Fjord” follows a conservative couple facing scrutiny after moving to the wife’s progressive remote Norwegian hometown and being suspected of disturbing behaviour regarding their children.
Other winners include “Minotaur” taking the Grand Prix (runner-up) prize, and “The Dreamed Adventure” a Jury Prize. Best director was a tie between Paweł Pawlikowski for “Fatherland” and both Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo for “The Black Ball”.
The actor honors were also split – Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto both winning Best Actress for “All of a Sudden” and Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne winning Best Actor for “Coward”. The Un Certain Regard Prize went to Sanda Woller’s “Everytime”. “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” won the Queer Palm.
This year’s Cannes competition jury was chaired by South Korean director Park Chan-wook, with members including Chloe Zhao, Demi Moore and Stellan Skarsgård.
The winners come in the wake of several acquisition deals in the past few days for Cannes titles with MUBI nabbing “Coward” and Netflix snagging “The Black Ball”.
